The Best Ways to Measure Success in GEO

One of the biggest challenges with Generative Engine Optimisation is measurement.

SEO has established reporting tools. You can track rankings, clicks, impressions, traffic and conversions with a reasonable degree of consistency.

GEO is less tidy.

There is no single dashboard that shows where your business ranks across ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI platforms. Answers can also change depending on the wording of the prompt, the user’s location and the information available to the model at that time.

That does not mean GEO cannot be measured. It just means you need a broader framework.

Start With Business Results

As with any marketing activity, the most important question is whether GEO contributes to business growth.

That could mean more enquiries, higher-value sales or better-quality leads.

Traffic from AI platforms is often relatively small compared with organic search, but the people arriving through AI may be further along in the buying process. They may already have compared several providers, asked follow-up questions and narrowed down their options before clicking through.

That can make AI traffic more valuable than the raw numbers initially suggest.

A business receiving 20 visits from AI platforms and generating three strong enquiries may be getting more value than one receiving hundreds of low-intent organic visits.

Traffic should therefore be assessed alongside conversions, lead quality and commercial value.

Track AI Referral Traffic

Google Analytics 4 can show visits arriving from AI tools, although the quality of the reporting depends on whether the platform passes clear referral data.

You should monitor:

  • The number of visits from AI platforms
  • The pages those visitors land on
  • The actions they take
  • The number of enquiries or purchases they generate
  • The conversion rate compared with other channels

It is also useful to check whether AI visitors spend longer on the website, view more pages or visit commercially important sections.

For ecommerce businesses, Shopify also has an Agentic channel. This can provide additional visibility into traffic and sales influenced by AI shopping experiences.

However, referral traffic only tells you what happens when someone clicks through. An AI platform may mention your business without linking to it, which means a large part of GEO visibility will never appear in your analytics.

That is why direct monitoring is essential.

Use a Monthly Prompt-Tracking Exercise

A practical way to measure GEO is to choose a fixed set of prompts and test them every month.

For example, an SEO agency might choose ten commercially relevant prompts:

  1. Which are the best SEO agencies in Hull?
  2. Who offers GEO services in Yorkshire?
  3. Which UK agencies specialise in AI SEO?
  4. What is the best SEO agency for a small business in Hull?
  5. Which marketing agencies in Hull have strong client case studies?
  6. Who can help an ecommerce business improve its organic traffic?
  7. Which agencies offer both SEO and conversion rate optimisation?
  8. Who are the leading automotive SEO agencies in the UK?
  9. Which SEO consultants work with businesses in Yorkshire?
  10. What marketing agency should a Hull business use for SEO and Google Ads?

These prompts should be tested in incognito or while logged out where possible. This helps reduce the influence of previous conversations, account history and personalisation.

Run the same ten prompts across three AI engines each month. For example:

  • ChatGPT
  • Gemini
  • Perplexity

That gives you 30 responses to review each month.

The aim is not to treat each answer as a fixed ranking. AI responses can vary, so the value comes from looking for patterns over time.

What to Record

For every prompt and AI platform, record whether your business appears.

You should also note which competitors are mentioned. This allows you to calculate your share of mentions rather than looking at your visibility in isolation.

For example, across 30 responses in one month:

  • Your business is mentioned 18 times
  • Competitor A is mentioned 21 times
  • Competitor B is mentioned 14 times
  • Competitor C is mentioned 9 times

This immediately gives you a clearer view of your position within the market.

You should then classify each mention in more detail.

Was the Mention Positive, Negative or Neutral?

A mention is not automatically valuable.

An AI platform might recommend your business positively, list it neutrally or raise concerns based on information it has found elsewhere.

Record each mention as:

  • Positive
  • Neutral
  • Negative

A positive mention may describe the business as experienced, well reviewed or particularly suitable for the user’s requirements.

A neutral mention may simply include the business in a list without offering a clear recommendation.

A negative mention could refer to poor reviews, limited services or outdated information.

Tracking sentiment helps you understand how AI systems interpret your reputation, not just whether they know you exist.

Did You Receive a Proper Link?

Record whether the AI response contains a clickable link to your website.

A brand mention without a link can still improve awareness, but it is much harder to measure and less likely to generate an immediate visit.

You should also check where the link points.

A link to the homepage may be less useful than a link to a relevant service page, case study or product. Over time, this can show you which pages AI platforms consider most useful or authoritative.

Was the Information Correct?

Check whether the response accurately describes your business.

That includes:

  • Services
  • Locations
  • Industries
  • Experience
  • Pricing, where mentioned
  • Contact details
  • Products or specialisms

Incorrect information can damage trust even when the business is being recommended.

For example, an AI platform may say that a company only serves Hull when it operates nationally, or describe it as a web design agency when its main service is SEO.

These inaccuracies should be logged and monitored. They may indicate that your website, business listings or external references are unclear or inconsistent.

Where Did the Information Come From?

Finally, record the apparent source of the information.

This could be your own media, such as:

  • Your website
  • Service pages
  • Blog content
  • Case studies
  • Company profiles you control

Alternatively, the information may come from earned or third-party media, including:

  • News coverage
  • Directories
  • Review platforms
  • Industry websites
  • Partner websites
  • Reddit or forum discussions
  • Other publishers

This distinction matters.

If most positive information comes from your own website, you may need to strengthen your external authority.

If AI platforms rely heavily on third-party sources, you need to know whether those sources are accurate, current and favourable.

The strongest position is usually a consistent picture across both owned and external sources.

A Simple GEO Tracking Table

Your monthly GEO report could include the following columns:

PromptAI platformMentioned?Position in responseSentimentLinked?Information correct?Source typeCompetitors mentioned
Best SEO agencies in HullChatGPTYesFirst recommendationPositiveYesYesOwn website and reviewsCompetitor A, Competitor B
Best SEO agencies in HullGeminiNoNot includedN/ANoN/AN/ACompetitor A, Competitor C
Best SEO agencies in HullPerplexityYesIncluded in listNeutralYesPartlyDirectory and websiteCompetitor B

Once this has been completed for all 30 responses, you can calculate:

  • Overall mention rate
  • Mention rate by platform
  • Share of mentions compared with competitors
  • Percentage of positive mentions
  • Percentage of mentions containing a link
  • Percentage of responses containing accurate information
  • Percentage of mentions based on owned or external sources

That gives you a repeatable benchmark.

Keep the Prompts Consistent

The same core prompts should be used each month so that you can compare results properly.

Changing all ten prompts every month makes it difficult to tell whether performance has improved.

You can still review the set every few months. Search behaviour changes, services evolve and new commercial priorities emerge. However, most of the prompts should remain stable enough to provide a meaningful trend.

It is also worth avoiding prompts that are too broad.

A question such as “What is the best marketing agency?” is unlikely to produce commercially useful insight. A more specific prompt based on location, service, sector or customer need will be much more valuable.

Monitor Consistency Between AI Engines

A business may appear prominently in one AI platform and not at all in another.

It may also be described differently across platforms.

ChatGPT might position the business as an SEO specialist, while Gemini describes it as a general marketing agency. Perplexity may cite a third-party directory containing outdated information.

These differences are worth tracking.

The goal is not necessarily to receive identical wording everywhere. It is to build a consistent overall picture of what the business does, where it operates and why someone should choose it.

Do Not Ignore Traditional SEO Metrics

GEO measurement should not replace SEO reporting.

Organic rankings, search visibility, backlinks, branded searches and website performance still matter. In fact, they often support stronger AI visibility.

SEO remains the foundation of GEO. A business with weak content, poor technical performance and little external authority is unlikely to become consistently visible across AI platforms.

The two should be measured together.

You may see improvements in AI mentions before referral traffic increases. You may also see stronger branded search demand as people encounter the company in AI answers and later search for it on Google.

Looking at both channels helps avoid missing that wider impact.

Your Website Still Needs to Convert

Getting mentioned is only the beginning.

When an AI platform links to your website, the landing page still needs to turn that visit into an enquiry or sale.

That means the page must clearly explain the offer, build confidence and make the next step obvious.

A strong GEO campaign can increase visibility and send better-informed prospects to the website. It cannot compensate for unclear messaging, weak calls to action or a poor user experience.

The full journey still matters.

GEO Success Is a Pattern, Not a Single Number

There is no one metric that proves GEO is working.

The clearest picture comes from combining AI referral traffic, conversions, prompt testing, competitor mentions, sentiment, links, accuracy and source analysis.

A monthly test using ten prompts across three AI engines gives most businesses a practical starting point.

Over time, you should be able to see whether your business is mentioned more often, described more positively and linked to more consistently. You should also see whether AI platforms understand the business more accurately and rely on stronger sources when producing their answers.

That is what meaningful GEO progress looks like.
